Art of Hybridization

Presentation by Rosie Ratigan, Vice President of the Red Desert Audubon Society

Andrea Arabona, President of RDAS will also be available for a Q & A

Some of the original artwork from Art of Hybridization (AOH)  will be on display in the Carnegie Room during the presentation.
Enter a drawing for several items including an original watercolor from the Art of Hybridization (AOH) project, AOH tote bag, AOH journal and selected bird and art books donated by the Lander Library (FCLL)

The main objective of the AOH project is to educate the public about evolution and the process of speciation.  Secondary objectives are to gain an understanding of art and the process of creating art and to acquire knowledge of science and how we study hybridization in birds.  Six different bird species and their hybrids were studied.  The Lazuli Bunting, Indigo Bunting, Bullock's Oriole, Baltimore Oriole, Red-Shafted Flicker, and Yellow-Shafted Flicker
were all represented in the 18 original oil paintings.  The triptych which includes all six bird species and
their hybrids, is on permanent display at the University of Wyoming, Biodiversity Institute as an interactive teaching tool.

This project was funded by the University of Wyoming Biodiversity Institute Novel Outreach and Education Grant, Fremont County Lander Library and Red Desert Audubon Society

May 29 - July 11, 2020

The Lander Art Center, 224 Main Street, Lander, Wyoming, hosted the exhibition 'Wild Silence' perspectives by Wyoming Women.  The six week art exhibition showcased the artwork of Rosie Ratigan, Jenny Reeves-Johnson and Susan Grinels.  The exhibition opening was Friday, May 29, 2020 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. and free and open to the public with complimentary refreshments.  The artists were available at the reception for questions on their artwork.  The three Lander artists had on display their original paintings, stoneware, collages and unique artwork.  The exhibition featured the female perspective of Wyoming landscape, wildlife, flora and fauna in a multitude of mediums.

2020 was a difficult time for everyone with the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.  For artists like myself we stayed busy and safe in our studios producing artwork.  Below is my painting of a Western Meadowlark that was featured on the cover of
Wyoming Artscapes magazine summer 2020.

During the 2019 Wyoming Arts Councils 'Plein Air in the Parks' in Sinks Canyon State Park event,

Beautiful Wyoming Show

The inspiration for the show, 'Beautiful Wyoming' was the beautiful Wyoming landscape where Ratigan has lived for 38 years.  Rosie explains, "For all who live in Wyoming and call it home, enjoy the beauty of Wyoming's majestic mountains, beautiful aspen trees, local flora and fauna daily.  Her goal through her paintings, is to capture Wyoming's beauty and paint it on her canvas.   Rosie states, "For in painting what you love, your heart touches the canvas through your brush."

'Bears & Birds' Show
Lander Bake Shop    December 1 - 31,
2017

The bear paintings of the 'Bears & Birds' show, was inspired by a black bear that visited Black Mountain Ranch where Rosie and her husband Dan live 10 miles north west of Lander.  Choco, as Rosie calls the black bear, visited the ranch in the fall of 2016.  Choco watched from across the North Fork of the
Popo Agie River and almost seemed to pose for the camera.

The bird paintings in the show is Rosie's love of birds and painting them.  Birds always seem to fly into Rosie's paintings.

Event and Exhibition Schedule 2016

Fur and Feathers Exhibition
Lander Bake Shop

My "Fur & Feathers" show was inspired by a photography class I attended at the Lander Art Center a couple of years ago.  During the class we took a field trip to the Raynold's buffalo ranch in Sinks Canyon near Lander, Wyoming.  May and the late Dave Raynolds graciously took us in the back of their flat bed truck into the middle of their bison herd!  What a thrill for all the photography students.  Fortunately I took many great photographs of their bison and that was the inspiration for the "fur" part of my "Fur & Feathers" show.

The second part of my "Fur & Feathers" show was inspired by my love for birds.  Birds are my favorite subject with their beauty and innocence, from diminutive song birds to larger birds and birds of prey.  I have found that in loving what I paint, my paintings are truly better and come from my heart.

It Seemed like a Good Idea at the Time - Art Exhibition
